The 77-year-old Republican was convicted on all 34 charges of manipulating business records to hide a Stormy Daniels-silence payment. Trump could face four years in prison for each count, but probation is more likely for a first-time offender.
Trump can run against President Joe Biden's reelection despite his felony conviction, calling the trial rigged. Biden's campaign stressed the rule of law and Trump's threat to democracy.
On July 11, Trump will be sentenced before the Republican National Convention, where he is expected to be nominated. Due to the high stakes, jurors' identities were kept hidden throughout the trial.
In addition to New York accusations, Trump faces federal and state charges for trying to overturn the 2020 election. However, these trials are unlikely to start before the presidential election.
A $130,000 payment to Daniels was alleged to prevent her from exposing a 2006 sexual encounter with Trump. Daniels testified extensively and accused Trump of illegally concealing his actions from voters.
Trump's team has downplayed the verdict's impact, but political observers say it could sway voters, especially in close areas. Despite his ruined image, Trump's following still supports him, and an appeal against the conviction can drag out the court struggle for months.
