Former U.S. President Donald Trump is now facing federal criminal charges relating to his attempted undoing of the 2020 elections. The indictment accuses him of sharing fake news and creating a riot on January 6th on Capitol Hill. He faces a conspiracy charge for cheating the U.S. Government and preventing the electoral count. Special Counsel Jack Smith unveiled the indictment and promised a speedy trial would be followed.

Highlights from the 45-page indictment: Using false claims of election fraud, Trump tried to stay in power. The charges include allegations against six unnamed co-conspirators who sought to undermine election results in several states. One quote that has been included is a reference to what Trump said about election fraud and his refusal not to condemn the Capitol violence, both false statements.

Still, with the charges, he definitely calls it a witch hunt.

An indictment is an effort to interfere with his potential 2024 presidential campaign, Trump claims. His legal battles continue, with other investigations underway in Florida and New York.

But the indictment didn't shake Trump's elemental dominance within the Republican Party. He remains a top 2024 candidate and continues to wage rallies of his backers against what he calls unfair persecution. More legal bullets might follow as prosecutors in Georgia also probe allegations of election meddling involving Trump and his allies.
