Dobaara Review
Expectations
Huma Qureshi made her right debut with the release of 'Gangs of Wasseypur' followed by her presence in films like 'D-Day', 'Dedh Ishqiya', 'Badlapur' and 'Jolly LLB2'. The last film was her biggest box office hit and now she returns back in a film which runs entire on her shoulders.
'Dobaara', also stars her real life brother Saqib Saleem, making it an exciting film. The trailers look promising but at the same time being an official adaptation of an international horror film, also takes away the charm. Thus, with decent amount of expectations the movie releases with several films.
Story
'Dobaara' is a story of Natasha Merchant (Huma Qureshi) and her brother Kabir Merchant (Saqib Saleem). Their childhood was totally traumatized due to the mysterious death of their mother, Lisa Merchant (Lisa Ray) and Kabir killing his father Alex Merchant (Adil Hussain). The day Kabir gets released, Natasha drags him back to their old house where there is an ancient mirror which as per her is the reason for the killing of their parents. Natasha feels that the mirror is haunted and possess dark powers which can manipulate people around it. Natasha decides to record entire happenings in a video format and later destroy the haunted mirror. Sadly, things does not go in the favour of Natasha.
The 'Glitz' Factor
The writers try their level best to create an interesting screenplay by inserting the flashback moments at frequent intervals. The flashback scenes work due to its intriguing factor. All the scenes featuring Adil Hussain are worth watching for sure. His track is interesting as well as engaging.
The cinematography is good and gives the movie an international touch. The background music is average.Saqib Saleem is a bit better, but ends up being a victim of a half-baked character.
Adil Hussain is superb in his part. He makes the movie going and delivers his part with total grace. Lisa Ray, Abhishek Singh, Rysa Saujani and Rhea Chakraborty are fine in their small parts.
The 'Non-Glitz' Factor
The story as we all know is adapted from Hollywood's film 'Oculus' and people who have seen the original will find 'Dobaara' as a weak clone. The entire conversation between Huma and Saqib looks highly pretentious, verbose and forced. There is no chemistry or connectivity in all the scenes featuring Huma and Saqib.
All the scenes featuring Adil Hussain are worth watching for sure. His track is interesting as well as engaging. The confusion in the finale track was a bit overdone and the movie suddenly ends and leaves its audiences on a disappointing note. The whole concept is fantastic, but the execution is not up to the mark.
There are no scary scenes or even one of those forced scene which has all the chills present in it. It's just forced confusion and long tales, which keeps you miles away from the horror genre.
Director Prawaal Raman ends up delivering a mediocre project. The film fails to connect in its conversational as well as horror part.
Huma Qureshi fails to get inside the skin of her character. Madalina Bellairu hams to the fullest.
Final 'Glitz'
'Dobaara' is an unworthy clone of its original film. Even the die-hard horror film lovers would prefer to stay away from this boring non-horror film.
