It has been announced that a meeting of the DMK’s high-powered committee is to meet this Friday (29th December) to take stock of the party’s poll debacle in R.K. Nagar where it had to forfeit its security deposit on the way to suffering one of its worst-ever performances.
Assembly by-polls in R.K. Nagar, which were abandoned in April, were held last Thursday (21st December). Counting of votes were taken up yesterday and by noon, independent candidate Dinakaran had established a clear lead over his nearest rival and AIADMK’s Madhusudanan while the DMK lagged behind at the third spot. When the final results were out by the evening, the DMK had forfeited its security deposit.
That a ‘local’ candidate (Marudhu Ganesh) couldn’t help the DMK win the seat despite the support of parties such as MDMK, VCK and the Communists and in the absence of a united AIADMK hasn’t gone down well with the party’s high-command. DMK bit the dust in the by-polls despite getting a favourable verdict in the 2-G scam on the morning of the date of polling.
The high-powered meeting would be headed by party’s working president M.K. Stalin and all the members have been asked to attend the meeting without fail. Party’s general secretary Anbazhanga has issued a notification in this regard. The meeting is likely to hold a detailed debate on the reasons/factors which led to the party’s colossal failure in losing to an independent candidate in R.K. Nagar.
