DMK’s working president M.K. Stalin has said that the Madurai Airport would be named after Muthuramalinga Thevar as and when it assumes power in the State in future.

‘Thevar Jayanti’, signifying the 110th birthday celebrations of Muthuramalinga Thevar (a freedom fighter and Forward Bloc leader), along with the 55th ‘Guru Pooja’, commenced at the Thevar Memorial in his native Pasumpon Village. Stlain garlanded Thevar’s huge statue at Goripalayalm and paid floral tributes to the late leader.

Stalin recalled how his father and DMK president Karunanidhi erected a huge statue for Thevar during the earlier DMK regime so as to laud Thevar’s services to the society. “Thevar fought for an equal society and is loved by people from all castes including OBSs, backward classes and the farming communities,” he said.

“The DMK takes pride in honouring Thevar and taking part in the celebration of his birthday anniversary. The horse-trading EPS-OPS regime should try its best to impress on the Centre the need to name the Madurai Airport after Muthuramalinga Thevar; if it doesn’t do so, the DMK would do the job as and when it assumes power in a few months’ time from now,” Stalin said, hinting at mid-term Assembly polls.
