DMK’s working president M.K. Stalin has asserted that the DMK would continue to hold protests in various parts of the State till Governor Banwarilal Purohit is removed from the office by the Centre or he quits on his own.
Purohit has been getting into some controversy or the other at regular intervals ever since he was appointed as Tamil Nadu Governor by the BJP-led Centre a few months back. It all started with him getting himself involved in managing/supervising administration at District levels. It is rumoured that he is also involved in the sex scandal which came to fore with the arrest of a Virudhunagar Maths professor who reportedly asked a few poor girl students to agree to ‘sex-for-marks’ offer.
It still remains uncertain whom did Professor Nirmala Devi refer to as the ‘higher ups’ at Madurai Kamaraj University. Purohit is also the ‘ex-officio’ chancellor of the University and some sections of the press reported that his name might be included in the scam in the days to come. On Tuesday, Purohit patted the cheeks of ‘The Week’ correspondent Lakshmi while replying to a specific query at the Raj Bhawan. He later apologized to the journalist saying he did so as she was akin to his ‘grand-daughter’.
Speaking to newsmen in Chennai yesterday, Stalin said that Purohit had been behaving as if he was at the helm of affairs and is in-charge of the State during Presidsent’s rule. Stalin termed Purohit’s act of patting a woman journalist’s cheeks as a ‘great humiliation to the State’ and added that Purohit no more deserves to occupy the gubernatorial assignment that he has been entrusted with.
“We won’t rest till the Governor resigns on his own or is removed by the BJP-led Centre,” Stalin asserted adding that protests would continue in this regard.
