Send us your feedback to audioarticles@vaarta.com
Among the constituencies in South Tamilnadu, Madurai has always been an important battleground. This was where bigwigs like Kakkan, KTK Thangamani, Ramamoorthy, Subramania Swamy, Mohan and MK Alagiri contested and won elections. Madurai was the only constituency which wasn't captured by any parties other Congress or Communist parties until 2009. In 1998, Subramania Swamy had won the elections with the support of ADMK, and in 2009, DMK's MK Alagiri and in 2014 ADMK's Gopalakrishnan emerged victorious.
Madurai comprises Madurai East, Madurai North, Madurai central, Madurai South, Melur seats and this time, DMK has fielded Su Venkatesan from its alliance partner Marxist Communist party as the candidate. The biggest positive of Academy award winning writer Su Venkatesan is that even though he had not been in politics, he's a familiar name in Madurai, and had actively participated in movements organized for the welfare of people.
People of Madurai have started believing that with his rich experience in the field of literature and politics, Su Venkatesan will definitely be an asset for Madurai, and his entry to parliament will be seen as pride of Madurai. After his announcement as the candidate from Madurai, his first announcement was that he will voice out in the parliament to rename Tejas train running from Madurai to Chennai to Thamizh Sangam train. On the other hand, as MK Alagiri still has a control over Madurai, it has been expected that his actions against DMK might also spoil the winning prospects of Su Venkatesan.
On behalf of ADMK, former Mayor Rajan Chellapa's son Raj Sathyan has been announced as the candidate, and it has been said that Raj Sathyan who was previously managing ADMK IT Wing, had secured this chance thanks to the recommendation of Sellur Raju. While minister RK Udhayakumar had made efforts to make Gopalakrishnan as the candidate again, and with the failure of his attempt, it has been expected that an internal conflict might arise during elections.
Though he's the son of former Mayor, Madurai people not knowing Raj Sathyan is a negative, but he has a positive that is missing in Su Venkatesan which is nothing but the power of money. With ADMK known to spend huge money to secure victory, it is to be seen what Su Venkatesan will do to counter the influence of money.
Raj Sathyan belongs to Mukkulathor caste, and Venkatesan and his wife belong to Nayudu and Saurashtra sections, and since all these three sections are majority in Madurai, it cannot be guaranteed if the caste votes can determine victory like Thoothukudi. Besides, whether Kamal Haasan's Makkal Needhi Maiam and TTV Dinakaran's Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam will spoil the victory chances by splitting the votes will be known only after they announce their respective candidates for Madurai.
