On the day when a huge portrait of former chief-minister J. Jayalalithaa was unveiled in the Legislative Assembly, the DMK moved the High Court of Madras seeking removal of the portrait on the premise that the former chief-minister had been found guilty by Supreme Court in the misappropriation of assets case.
Speaker Dhanapal unveiled the portrait of ‘Puratchithalaivi’ J. Jayalalithaa in the Assembly on Monday morning in the presence of chief-minister Edapadi K. Palaniswami and deputy chief-minister O. Panneerselvam. Opposition parties including the DMK and the Congress boycotted the ceremony, expressing their strong opposition to unveiling the portrait of the late chief-minister.
Later in the day, DMK MLA J. Anbazhagan moved the High Court of Madras by filing a petition seeking removal of the portrait which was unveiled in the morning. The petition referred to the former chief-minister being referred to as ‘guilty’ by the apex Court while upholding the judgment of a special Bangalore Court in the assets case. The petition would be taken up for disposal on an ‘emergency’ basis.
