Opposition DMK and its allies and friendly parties would hold huge protest demonstrations on Monday (16th April) against the proposed amendments to the SC/ST (PoA) Act.
The Supreme Court had, on its own, made some amendments in the provisions under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 regulating action to be taken on complaints of atrocities against Govt. officials. It said that Govt. officials could be arrested only if the officers/superiors grading their performance recommended such action against the officials in question.
This led to huge backlash as SC/STs protested hard across North Indian States stating that this amounted to a clear dilution of the provisions governing the said Act. It is in this backdrop that the DMK, which had been training its energy in protesting for the (setting up of) Cauvery Management Board, has now decided to protest against the proposed amendments.
A huge protest meeting against these amendments would be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday (16th April) at Chennai’s Valluvar Kottam and would be attended by DMK cadres as well as cadres of its friendly parties and allies, it has been announced.
