Disney has revealed the highly anticipated sequel to 2016's Moana, about a Polynesian teenager who crosses the ocean to save her people. Fans are divided on Moana 2 after seeing its trailer. Some were excited, while others doubted a sequel.
Auli'i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson will reprise their Moana and Maui voices. Disney provides a plot summary despite the trailer's limited details. In the sequel, Moana receives an unexpected call from her navigational ancestors and must cross treacherous, long-lost Oceanian waters.
The new animated musical promises a long voyage with Moana, Maui, and a new cast of unusual sailors, including Heihei and Pua. Maui holds both animals and jokes about preparing "bacon and eggs" on their voyage in the trailer.
Eight years later, youngsters who saw the original film are now teens or adults. Disney targets nostalgics and young children. One fan said, "Good looking. Amazing film with fantastic songs: Moana. This sequel should be comparable." One said, "As long as the songs are as iconic as the first, I'm all in." Some doubted it, saying "Nobody asked for this" and "Disney just can't stop milking a good movie."
Original Moana garnered $687 million worldwide and received two Oscar nominations. Fans were astonished when the sequel was announced for a theatrical release after being slated for Disney+. Lin-Manuel Miranda will not compose, unlike the original. The soundtrack will be composed by four composers, including Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, famed for their TikTok Bridgerton musical.
Dwayne Johnson will appear in a 2026 live-action Moana adaptation.
