Veteran Mollywood director and the Chairman of Kerala State Chalachitra Academy, Kamal has been accused of sexual harassment by a young actress. As per the reports, the actress claimed that the filmmaker had raped her several times in return for the lead role in his next film - Pranaya Meenukalude Kadal. As per her complaint, the filmmaker took her to a flat and abused her and a similar incident took place at his official residence later. She also added that the incident took place during the shoot of Aami that hit theatres in 2018.
Responding to the reports, the director has called the allegations are cooked up and baseless. He added that there was a clear conspiracy behind the allegation and said that he suspects an officer who was ousted from Chalachitra academy to be behind this. Kamal is said to have received a legal notice based on this and he called his advocate and informed him about the notice. As there was no response from the complainant, the director is yet to take any action.
"This is a baseless allegation. It is true that I had received a legal notice, a year ago. When I contacted my advocate, he said since it was a false allegation, I needed to wait for follow-up action from the other party. That did not happen and so I ignored it. I suspect a former employee of Chalachitra Academy is behind bringing this up now. He had quit his position due to some internal conflicts. Only my advocate and the former employee knew about the legal notice that was received a year ago. However, I do not have enough evidence to prove that he is behind it, at the moment," Kamal told TOI.
