Dinakaran's troubles far from over; disqualification as MLA is a still possible!

A month after he won from R.K. Nagar Assembly constituency in North Chennai as an independent candidate defeating the ruling AIADMK and opposition DMK candidates, MLA Dinakaran’s troubles are from over as the sword (of disqualification as an MLA) is still hanging over his head.

A close aide and supporter of Dinakaran has reportedly spilled the beans about Dinakaran’s technique of giving the voters a ‘Rs.20 token’ which was to assure them ‘more money’ after the polls are over for voting in his favour. This has clearly swung the pendulum of suspicion toward Dinakaran and the many cash-for-vote complaints made against him in this regard seem to be absolutely true.

R.K. Nagar fell vacant with the demise in December, 2016 under mysterious of former Tamil Nadu chief-minister J. Jayalalithaa. The by-polls, scheduled for last April, were cancelled at the very last moment after large-scale complaints of cash-for-vote practice was found to have been in indulged in by leading political parties in the fray. The cancelled by-poll was held on 21st December last year by which time the AIADMK had unified under EPS-OPS, sacking Sasikala and Dinakaran from the party’s set-up.

Former MLA and Dinakaran’s keen supporter Rajasekar said in Trichy yesterday that the ‘Jaya treatment’ video was released on the eve of by-polls only on Dinakaran’s instructions. He also conceded that ‘Rs.20 tokens’ were issued to the people to influence their votes by assuring them that they would get more money after the polls were over.

It remains to be seen whether the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and Enforcement Directorate would work in unison to take action against Dinkaran and recommend his disqualification as an MLA to the Election Commission.
