Shahrukh Khan and Kajol starrer romantic drama 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge' is a benchmark in Indian cinema. It was a blockbuster at the time of release and over years it has acquired the status of an iconic and cult classic. After 26 years of its theatrical release, director Aditya Chopra is about to recreate the film as his new project.
Before hardcore DDLJ fans get all stressed up about this development, it should be cleared that the film is not getting remade as a new Bollywood project. Aditya Chopra is going to direct DDLJ again as a musical play which will be performed on Broadway. Aditya has been working on it for last three years and this is going to be his Broadway debut. He feels that Broadway and Bollywood have a lot in common about the ways they use dance and music in the storytelling.
Talking about the project, he said, "26 years later I’m going back to my original vision of the story of DDLJ, a love story of an American boy and an Indian girl, a love story of two cultures…two worlds. But this time the medium is not cinema but theatre. 26 years later I will be directing DDLJ all over again but this time as an English language Broadway Musical for a worldwide audience."
