On Republic Day, a mob of farmers led by Punjabi actor Deep Sidhu reached the Red Fort and illegally unfurled a Sikh religious flag. Sidhu's old pic with Narendra Modi and Amit Shah has been doing the rounds on the Internet. As per some anti-BJP stalwarts like lawyer-activist Prashant Bhushan and actor Prakash Raj, it goes to show that Sidhu is a BJP supporter who was doing the bidding of the saffron party to allegedly defame the protests by farmers.
Social media influencer Dhruv Rathee, who is known for generating fake news often, wrote, "Was Deep Sidhu and his followers responsible for hoisting that flag at the Red Fort? He is the same person who campaigned for BJP in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Last time also he caused trouble in the protest by giving alleged Pro-Khalistani statements." Rakesh Tikait of the BKU today told ANI that Sidhu is not a Sikh and is a worker of the BJP. He also disowned Sidhu's action of unfurling the flag at Red Fort.
Turns out that Sidhu is actually anti-BJP and his opinion about the party is not positive. Columnist Kartikeya Tanna wrote, "Deep Sidhu, who joined Sunny Deol (an actor + MP candidate), sought to meet Modi in April 2019. Deep campaigned for Sunny Deol. It's been 18 months since then. Are you telling me people don't go corrupt in 18 months?" Also, after the election, Sidhu once said that he regrets the decision to campaign for the BJP.
A BJP functionary said that if the logic of guilt by association is to be used, Kashmiri separatist Yasin Malik is a Congressi because Manmohan Singh had welcomed him and spoke with him when the UPA was in power.
