Devendra Fadnavis announced his resignation as Maharashtra's chief minister, hours after the Supreme Court ordered a floor test in the state assembly and deputy CM Ajit Pawar too did the same. In the recently concluded Maharastra Assembly elections, the BJP won 105 seats in alliance with the Shiva Sena which got 56.
However, the latter party headed by Uddav Thackeray wanted fifty-fifty in the ministry and its candidate as chief minister for half the term. The BJP did not agree and there was a fallout and the party with the support of the NCP formed the government with Devendra Fadnavis becoming the chief minister and Ajit Pawar as his deputy.
The opposition went to the Supreme Court which has ruled a floor test on Wednesday and has asked the BJP to prove its majority. More drama is expected in the next twenty four hours as the battle for Maharashtra intensifies and the opposition consisting of Congress and Shiva Sena claiming they have 168 MLAs strength.
