Before 2010 very rarely one got to see a film that breaks away from the trodden path and gives the viewer a totally refreshing viewing experience. The just released Demonte Colony` joins such great films of the past five years like Mouna Guru`, Pizza`, Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kanom`, Soodhu Kavvum`, Pasanga`, Yamirukka Bayame`, Mundasupatti` and Jigarthanda` to name a few.

Demonte Colony` has been made on a very safe budget and the returns are going to be many times more, judging by the tremendous reception from all sections of the audiences. Here we take a look at some of the important factors that contribute to the amazing film.

Writer- Director

Ajay Gnanamuthu has given a master class lecture on screen writing through his film to any aspiring writer. The film has four main protagonists who are put into an extraordinary situation due to an unnecessary blunder they commit by entering into the Demonte Colony and the screenplay springs twists after twist to ensure that the audience is kept guessing, ensuring that they do not take their eyes off the screen even for a fleeting moment. The film evokes laughter many times with natural situational comedy which does not hinder with the narrative. In good horror writing the build up to the danger is more important than showing the danger itself and Ajay achieves this with full marks in his very first film itself.

As far as the making goes Ajay again has excelled in bringing out stellar performances from his cast and crew. The entire second half is set in a single room with very little space, but the way the events unfold the director has mesmerized the audience into following his film. The director has cleverly used day to day things we use as tools to enhance the suspense like the television, the cell phone, the emergency lamp, the window and the main door of the room and this has a high impact with the audiences.

Technicians

The period look in some portions of the movie has been achieved with minimal but effective set decoration by art director T. Santhanam like the floor tiling and window screens. The bachelor room is set up with awesome detailing.

Cameraman Arvind Singh, Editor Bhuvan Srinivasan and Music Director Keba Jeremiah have worked perfectly in tandem to create an impression of the audience also being trapped in the housing board quarters and a sigh of relief can be literally heard from the audience when Arulnithi`s character escapes from the house only to be served another twist. The final images that capture Arulnithi realizing his true plight and the smiling Sathish inside a truck returning with Demonte`s Necklace lingers long in the minds of the viewers.

The computer graphic work too is quite good in most of the scenes, considering the budget, with special mention is due to the effect of the burnt figure of Demonte and the freezing effects in the climax.

The Sound fx Engineer is a very integral part of this film since there are too many minute detailing necessary as most of the action is taking place in a single room and it is a job very well done. The best example is making the presence of Demonte felt only with the sound of his rifle, hitting the floor and the Portugese murmur that is heard far in the background.

Actors

Arulnidhi proves in Demonte Colony` that his Mouna guru` was not a fluke. His character in the film is the lowliest of the four friends and kudos to the young actor for daring to do it. All four characters move the story forward with equal screen timing and Ramesh Thilak, Abhishek and Sananth have all done a perfect job of depicting naturally the plight of people who get caught in such a situation.

M.S. Bhaskar, Singam Puli and a superfluous Jangiri Madhumitha make their mark in fleeting appearances.

Producers

Mohana Movies is hero Arulnithi`s home banner and it is commendable that they have chosen to make this challenging film, which does not compromise by incorporating too many commercial ingredients and they can be proud of the result.

Overall Demonte Colony` is one more proof that Tamil Cinema is in good hands with youngsters who are pleasantly surprising audiences and critics alike with fresh content that elevate the industry to truly international standards.
