24-year-old Democrat Ashwin Ramaswami is running for the Georgia State Senate in District 48 against Republican incumbent Shawn Still. Ramaswami, an Indian American and member of Gen Z, launched his campaign a year ago centered on integrity in elections. It was during his time as an intern at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency that he witnessed former President Donald Trump fire his boss for questioning his claims of voter fraud in 2020.

Ramaswami ran uncontested in the Democratic primary and aims to unseat Still, a Trump ally indicted for allegedly pretending to be a fake elector to overturn the 2020 election. Ramaswami told USA TODAY that protecting the legitimacy of elections inspired him to run. "The next generation is stepping up to ensure integrity and honesty in politics," he said.

Yet she has outraised Still, who, placed in a Republican-drawn district, began collecting cash only in March after switching to the State House race, bringing in around $146,442 in the February-to-April period to Still's $6,400. Ramesh's campaign is focused on saving democracy, the economy, and health care. A recent Marist College poll revealed that 25% of Georgia adults prioritized saving democracy as their reason for voting, underscoring the dominance of this issue in the campaign.

Still, though, he's put up a strong legislative history, focusing on immigration, environmental legislation, and election integrity. And with that, an optimistic Ramaswami said, "I want to focus on education, health care, and reproductive rights," noting help from the team of Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff. There is a demographic rise in District 48, as in the last few years it has started witnessing an influx of different and diversified groups of college-educated voters. Even the most cynical political observers will agree that Ramaswami is the heavy underdog in the race.
