In a disturbing incident, the 60-year-old father of a girl from Delhi's Shahdara committed suicide after his daughter admitted to him that she is a lesbian and that she wanted to move in with a female friend.

Soon after the girl revealed the news to him, several members of their family gathered at their place and tried to convince her to withdraw herself from the relationship. When she firmly refused and stated that she wanted to move in with her girlfriend, the father stormed into his room and reportedly shot himself in the abdomen, despite the attempts made by his family members to stop him. The police found him lying in a pool of blood, following which they registered a case under section 25/27/54/59 of the Arms Act. The man's body has been sent for an autopsy.

Homosexuality was decriminalized in India by the Supreme Court in September 2018 and Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code which regarded homosexuality as a criminal offense was taken down.
