As violence has been spiralling out of control in east Delhi over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), it has been reported that 9 people, including a head constable, were killed while over 160 other people have been injured.
Mobs have been pelting stones and vandalizing private as well as public properties. The riot, that has been happening for over 24 hours, started right before US President Donald Trump arrived in the national capital. Police personnel had to fire tear gas shells and indulge in lathicharge in Maujpur and several other areas in north east Delhi as protests erupted between the pro- and anti-CAA groups.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal mentioned in a statement, "The entire country is worried about the violence that took place in Delhi in past two days. There has been loss of lives and properties. If violence increases it will affect everyone. All us are here to offer our prayers to Gandhi Ji who was a follower of non-violence."
Under the Citizenship Amendment Bill, which is now a law, illegal migrants of the Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi and Christian communities who have come from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan until December 31, 2014 will be eligible for an Indian citizenship.
