The Delhi High Court has turned down Dinakaran’s request to allot the ‘hat’ symbol to him as he contests the ensuing R.K. Nagar by-polls in Chennai as an independent candidate.

After the Election Commission of India recognized the unified ‘AIADMK’ headed by the OPS-EPS duo as the official party and allotted the party’s name, flag and the famed ‘Two-Leaves’ symbol to it, Dinakaran moved the Delhi Court challenging the Election Commission’s verdict. The petition challenging the verdict was taken up for interrogation yesterday by Justice Khar of the Delhi High Court.

Dinakaran’s counsel pleaded with the Court to allot the ‘hat’ symbol to him to contest the R.K. Nagar by-polls as an independent candidate. Counsel for AIADMK strongly opposed this plea after which the Court sought the views of the Election Commission’s counsel who said that anybody could be allotted the ‘hat’ symbol as per the prerogative of the polling officer in the concerned constituency.

Justice Khar disposed Dinakaran’s petition stating that the Court can’t pass orders directing anybody to allot ‘hat’ symbol to him.
