Former Nepal cricket team captain and Delhi Capitals spinner Sandeep Lamichhane was arrested over allegations of rape against a 17-year-old girl and has been sent into five more days of police custody on October 13. The cricketer was accused of raping the teenage girl in a hotel room in Nepal.
According to the case filed, the 22-year-old spin bowler allegedly took the minor girl to various places in Kathmandu and Bhaktapur for a visit on August 21 and raped her in a hotel room in Kathmandu the same night. Lamichhane, who said earlier that he would fully cooperate with the investigation, has denied all the allegations in court.
“I am sure I will get justice and will return to the cricket ground soon to make the name and fame of my beloved country and I pray for a speedy trial. I will fully cooperate in all stages of the investigation and will fight a legal battle to prove my innocence. Let the justice prevail," he had said in a Facebook post.
Lamichhane was playing in the Caribbean Premier League when the arrest warrant was issued against him in September. He was also the Nepal cricket team captain until last month, before being suspended by the national cricket board in order to help facilitate the investigation into the case. The spinner became the first player from the country to play in the Indian Premier League after he signed up to play for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2018.
