Deepika - The only silver lining in 'Break Ke Baad'
- IndiaGlitz, [Tuesday,November 30 2010]
As predicted, 'Break Ke Baad' failed to take even a 50% start on its release last weekend. The film saw an extensive release for itself (6-8 shows per multiplex at an average) and since there wasn't much buzz to begin with, the average occupancy was in 30%-40% range. What was worse was the fact that word of mouth too was in below average to average range which means the doors were shut for this Imran Khan & Deepika Padukone starrer.
With a mere 10 odd crores coming in the first weekend, the film isn't expected to break any new grounds over the weekdays.
Any silver lining here? Yes, the acclaim which Deepika has gained for herself from all quarters. If not for her spunky act, the film wouldn't have been half as decent as what it is today. However, from theatrical collections perspective, 'Break Ke Baad' is on sloppy grounds with it's collections not even expected to do half of 'I Hate Luv Storys' or even 'Anjaana Anjaani', both of which had crossed the 40 crores mark.
Another major release of the week was much delayed 'Allah Ke Banday' which finally saw the light of the day. As expected, the film garnered fair to good reviews for itself. In fact it wasn't thrashed by any critic and those who saw the film liked it as well. However, the problem lies in the fact that the number of people who saw the film was literally non-existent due to a mere 10% opening that 'Allah Ke Banday' suffered from.
As things stand today, the film has practically zero chances of finding much retention in theaters and would disappear without making any noise whatsoever. Also, due to its dark theme, visibility on home video and satellite too doesn't seem much promising. The only silver lining though is the discovery of a story teller in the form of Faruk Kabir who should be able to establish his career from this point on.
'Spanish Beauty', the dubbed version of Barbara Mori's half a decade old Spanish film, also saw a scattered release in some centres of the country. However, neither the promised (non-existent) sleaze could attract the masses nor the (expected) classy treatment of the film could entice audience much. The film too turned out to be a 'seen-it-done-before' affair with absolutely nothing to offer. No wonder, the film saw almost zero occupancy from the first show itself and struggled every day of the weekend.
Fourth release of the week was 'Khuda Kasam' which too saw a sparse release for itself. A decade old film starring Sunny Deol and Tabu, the film went totally unnoticed with not even critics bothering to review it. As for the audience, they didn't care either and decided to wait for Deols' upcoming extravaganza 'Yamla Pagla Deewana'.
