D Suresh Babu on Ee Nagaraniki Emaindi, future projects & more

Ahead of the release of 'Ee Nagaraniki Emaindi' on June 29, D Suresh Babu talks about Tharun Bhascker's vision. Catch the visionary producer also say what he wants to do in the next two years.

Since 'Pelli Choopulu' was a big hit, there are high expectations from the discerning sections from 'ENE'. How was it working with Tharun?

As a producer, my inputs for 'Ee Nagaraniki Emaindi' are zilch. More than on the banner, the pressure has been greater on Tharun Bhascker. He has got to prove himself and one film was not enough for him. I always knew that. I am confident that Tharun will reach great heights, as he loves cinema a lot. He always likes to narrate new stories. Although a number of big stars had asked him to join hands with them, he chose to do a small film, telling them he can't handle them! He is out to prove himself as a technician. He has got a vast potential that the industry can use.

What makes the director unique?

Tharun can extract the best in an actor. He extracts the kind of performance he needs so well. In the olden days, films were about heavy-duty content and melodrama. If you don't know how to handle subtlety, the output can't be fine. In today's cinema, it's all subtle. In films like 'Bobbili Raja' and 'Preminchukundam Raa', the hero is subtler than the male leads of his time.

I always knew it and tried to explain it to my directors. Tharun Bhascker has a sense of proportion when it comes to subtlety. A film is an amalgam of conversations between/among characters. If you don't picturize them in the right manner, the audience won't like the scenes. It's not possible for them to connect to the emotions. Rajamouli makes films on the basic emotion called revenge. But the way he conveys the emotion is very different from how others do it. His films give the audience a different kind of experience.

In the case of big films, the audience gives a leeway. But coming to small films, you have to tell something new to catch the audience's attention.

The technique of Sync Sound was deployed for 'ENE'. Why can't it be used for most films?

It's not like Sync Sound is not apt for mainstream commercial movies. In Bollywood, almost all commercial films use this technique. Aamir Khan has been doing it for years now, for he knows the technique's value. But circumstances are not always congenial to use the technique.

If your actor(s) don't know the language, it's not good to use Sync Sound. Also, outdoor locations make it all the more difficult. When you are doing it with Sync Sound, there is silence on the location as everybody is focused. There is no need for dubbing. Leaving aside whether Sync Sound goes into making a film a hit, the film's quality improves a lot because of it.

What is the vision of Suresh Productions regarding quality cinema?

Suresh Productions seeks to create small content with new subjects. That way, we can introduce new talent to the industry. That way, it will be easier to introduce new processes as well. Although there have been a lot of big and small movies being made every year, quality is not keeping pace with quantity. Quality should always be above quantity.

Where do you think are most filmmakers going wrong?

Out of some 1000 movies made every year in India, can we say that at least 10 percent of them are quality cinema? The industry suffers because of this lack of quality. Successful films don't necessarily bring quality. Processes are not being followed. Short-cuts are being resorted to everywhere. Doing the thing in the wrong way is what is the problem. Those who are following the procedures are acing the game, whichever field it may be. Suresh Productions seeks to usher in the best processes in the industry in the next two years.

What are your upcoming projects?

Suresh Productions is going to make both small and big films in association with other production houses (like People Media Factory). Bobby's film with Venkatesh and Naga Chaitanya is going to happen. Once Chaitanya is free, the shooting will start. I am teaming up with producers who can understand my ideas. I'm going to produce Rana Daggubati's Hiranya (in the direction of Gunasekhar). The film's VFX works will be of international quality. A film in the combination of Rana and Venkatesh will happen in 2019.
