Cyclone Amphan battered district after district of West Bengal on Wednesday. Even its capital city Kolkata was not spared. While 72 people have been killed, the extent of loss to public property is believed to be massive.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, urging the Narendra Modi government for help, has stated that the State has witnessed a never-seen-before catastrophe. "Almost the entire South 24 Parganas district stands shattered," she has been quoted as saying. In a few districts, the communication channels have got uprooted.
The CM said that over Rs 1 lakh crore of loss has been suffered by the State. "This is an economic meltdown in the time of a pandemic," the CM added.
