Cyclone alert signal No.2 has been hoisted at the Ports of Nagapattinam, Cuddalore and Pondichery along Tamil Nadu’s coast in view of the outbreak of cycloe 'Ockhi' which hit Kanniyakumari District and the surrounding places in all its fury.

Cycloe Ockhi hit the Southern parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala as it waded through the two States towards Lakshadweep.  Its trail resulted in uprooting of trees, heavy rains and flooding of low-lying areas in the affected places.  The deep-pressure depression which formed near the Bay of Bengal later transformed into ‘Cyclone Ockhi’ and hit the Southern-most District of Kanniyukumari, uprooting more than 500 trees.

Cyclone alert signal No.3 has been hoisted at Pamban Port in Ramanathapuram District, warning people that the Port faced the possibility of strong winds accompanied by heavy rains.  Likewise, cyclone alert signal No.2 has been hoisted at the Pots of Puducherry, Nagapattinam and Cuddalore, warning people that there existed a strong possibility of the ports getting hit by cyclone.

Met Centre reported late in the evening yesterday that ‘Cyclone Ockhi’, which had left a trail of destruction in Kanniyakumari District and in Thiruvananthapuram in neighbouring Kerala, had started moving towards Lakshadweep Islands.
