Cure.fit, the fitness group, has reportedly laid off 800 of its 5000 employees. Some of them are fitness trainers, while others are front-end staff and managers. With gyms closed down across the country due to the lockdown, Cure.fit is said to have suffered revenue losses.
"The startup has downsized its employee base across markets and initiated pay cuts across all levels," a Livemint report says.
A Reuters report adds that Cure.fit has shut down several of its fitness centres permanently in small towns. Only in big cities like Bengaluru will it continue to run them in the hope that things will limp back to normalcy.
Interestingly, the company had made a donation of Rs 5 Cr to PM-CARES in March. "CureFit's much-touted donation to PM-CARES has been brought up by almost every news media and random person online in connection with the layoffs, so it's a mystery that the brand itself did not think about how it would handle that angle in its communications," said Karthik, a social media influencer.
