Kamal Haasan was the only film industry celebrity who addressed gathering that including mostly politicians and journalists in the 75th year celebration of DMK Leader Kalaignar M.Karunanidhi's 'Murasoli' a Tamil Daily News paper. While Superstar Rajinikanth also participated in the event, he did not speak at the event and he also opted to sit with the audience and not on the dais.
Kamal's speech as usual was multi-layered and included some political overtones. Here is a crux of what he spoke at the event.
"Since childhood I admire Sivaji Ganesan after listening to his lengthy Tamil dialogues. At that age I was thinking that Sivaji himself would have written those dialogue. Once I came to know that they were written by Kalaignar, I started admiring him and it continues till day.
I asked the organisers whether Rajinikanth is also speaking at the event. They said he is attending only as a guest. I thought I could also not speak at the event and sit with him among the audience. Then looking at the mirror I started saying I will be missing a great opportunity in my life. Self respect is more important to me than self defense. The people sitting in the dais are those who hvae run their respective magazines for 100 years, 90 years and 75 years. I am the one who could not run my magazine for more than a few years. If I get a chance to sit with these people how can I miss that?
When it came to light that I will be participating in this function. People come and ask in Twitter whether I will join the DMK. If I had to join I would have joined in 1983. I received a telegram from Kalaignar asking why I should not join the DMK I did not give any reply to that. His greatness is that even he did not ask that again.
Let me talk some politics so that people (who expect that) will not scold me. Some people claim that Dravidam (Dravidian identity) will vanish soon. But unless and until there is Dravida in Jana Gana Mana it will survive. Dravidam is not just South India. It is a Pan-Indian phenomenon."
