Critics ask KCR where is the need for a new film city in Hyderabad

On Saturday, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao announced that a film city of international standards will be developed on the outskirts of Hyderabad on an area of 1500 to 2000 acres. The announcement was made in the presence of Megastar Chiranjeevi and Akkineni Nagarjuna.

However, not many are welcoming of the government's resolve to build a new film city in a city that already hosts Ramoji Film City. Ramanaidu Studios and Annapurna Studios will be joined by a state-of-the-art film studio that Allu Aravind will build in the coming years. On October 1, Aravind and Allu Arjun announced the setting up of Allu Studios.

The new film city, proposed to be built in collaboration with reputed architects, might enjoy the benefit of Hyderabad's locational advantages. The mushrooming of the OTT universe will also help it should giants like Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney Hotstar enter into medium- and long-term agreements.

Since the Telugu film industry has been entrenched in Hyderabad for decades, many see that further branching out has to happen only in Andhra Pradesh and not in Hyderabad. However, if the AP government is not forthcoming, the Telugu film industry will be inclined to latch on to the Telangana government's initiatives.
