A photography project by artist Sujatro Ghosh is highlighting the irony in India where one can get killed for allegedly harming a cow, but can easily run free if acquitted of raping or molesting a woman. Ghosh is throwing the spot light on the double standards that exist by photographing women wearing cow masks.

Statistics show that less than one-third of those accused of rape were convicted, in 2015. While this is not unique to India, what enrages activists like Ghosh is that people are willing to immediately take alleged perpetrators to task when cows, which Hindus consider sacred, are involved.

One of the participants remarked that chances of her being harassed while wearing a cow mask were slim, as “No one wants to harass anyone who looks like a deity or a representative of a deity.” What of all the female deities, one can only wonder.
