Owing to the nationwide lockdown, farmers across the country are not able to sell their produce in the markets. Several farmers who had cultivated strawberries for this tourist season are feeding their cattle with the premium fruit. "Tourists and ice cream producers are the main buyers of strawberries, but there are no tourists now," said a Mumbai farmer named Anil Salunkhe who had also produced several other premium fruits and veggies.
Meanwhile, farmers who cultivated strawberries and carrots in Munnar area of Idukki are also facing the brunt. "Strawberry is mostly sold in retail markets and they are shut due to lockdown," said Arul Mani, a recipient of Best Strawberry Farmer Award.
A farmer near Bengaluru has reportedly dumped 15 tonnes of rupees 5 lakh worth grapes in a nearby forest after failing to sell them. Expensive flower growers, who target the wedding orders are also facing the backlash as nobody is willing to purchase them even for one rupee.
