Mucormycosis, also known as Black Fungus, is reportedly the new health headache that India is facing. Scores of recovered Covid-19 patients are contracting it and suffering from severe complications. As per a BBC report, a surgeon has removed an eye among patients afflicted with the disease to save them from death. The mortality rate is 50%.

As per experts, black fungus is the result of overuse of steroids in COVID treatment, unhygienic oxygen masks and ventilators, besides rising blood sugar levels.

Taking to Twitter, Dr. Arvinder Singh Soin wrote that Mucormycosis can result in loss of vision, brain damage and even death. What are the ways to prevent it?

Avoiding steroid overuse, controlling diabetes, avoiding unnecessary antibiotics, and ensuring hygenic oxygen (clean concentrators, clean water for humidifier, certified source) is the way ahead.

"Headache, facial pain, nasal congestion, pain around the eyes, watering of eyes are the early symptoms. Depending on the symptoms, consult an ENT/Eye/Neuro doctor immediately," he adds.
