The emergence of a novel COVID-19 subvariant, JN.1, identified in Kerala this month, has raised concerns about a potential surge in cases, particularly with the holiday season approaching. As of the Union Health Ministry's report on December 18, India recorded 260 new COVID-19 cases, contributing to an active case count of 1,828. The cumulative death toll has reached 5,33,317, as per the 8 am update. India's total COVID-19 tally now stands at 4.50 crore (4,50,05,076) cases, with recoveries reaching 4,44,69,931 and a national recovery rate of 98.81 percent, as indicated on the health ministry's website. The case fatality rate remains constant at 1.19 percent.

Acknowledging the evolving situation, the Centre has issued a directive to States and Union Territories to maintain constant vigilance, given the rise in COVID-19 cases and the detection of the JN.1 subvariant in the country. In a communication to the States, Union Health Secretary Sudhansh Pant underscored the importance of sustained vigilance. He highlighted that due to consistent and collaborative efforts between the Centre and State governments, the country has been successful in maintaining a sustainable low rate of COVID-19 transmission. The first case of the JN.1 subvariant was recently identified in Kerala.

Secretary Sudhansh Pant further noted that some states, including Kerala, have reported a slight increase in COVID-19 cases. Consequently, States were advised to ensure continuous monitoring and reporting of district-wise cases of Influenza-like Illness and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness in all health facilities. This proactive approach aims to facilitate early detection and response to potential outbreaks, emphasizing the need for a collective effort to manage the evolving situation effectively.

The Health Secretary underscored, "Through continuous and collaborative efforts between the Centre and state governments, we have successfully maintained a trajectory with sustainable low rates." The ministry has delineated several strategies aimed at ensuring effective control of COVID-19.
