Days after Tamil actor Mansoor Ali Khan announced his intention to file a defamation case against actors Trisha Krishnan, Chiranjeevi, and Khushboo Sundar, the Madras High Court, on December 22, denied him permission to proceed, categorizing his legal pursuit as a mere "publicity stunt" and imposing a fine of Rs 1 lakh.
The Madras High Court's verdict comes in the wake of Mansoor Ali Khan's controversial and sexist comments directed at Trisha Krishnan, specifically lamenting the absence of a 'bedroom scene' with her. As reported by Bar and Bench, the court not only fined Khan but directed him to deposit the amount with the Adyar Cancer Institute in Chennai.
In its judgment, the court acknowledged the response of Trisha and other actors, noting that their reaction was in line with how "any normal person would have" responded to Khan's comments.Justice N Sathish Kumar, on December 12, had strongly criticized Mansoor Ali Khan for his sexist remarks and emphasized the need for responsible behavior in public, especially considering the influential role actors play as societal role models.
During a prior hearing on December 11, the court criticized Mansoor Ali Khan for initiating the defamation case against Trisha and seeking ₹1 crore in compensation from the Ponniyin Selvan actress. The court questioned the rationale behind Khan's legal action and suggested that Trisha should be the one pursuing legal action against him. Furthermore, the court raised concerns about whether Mansoor's apology was a genuine expression of remorse or merely an attempt to avoid arrest.
Before formally announcing his intention to file a case against Trisha, Mansoor had issued a statement apologizing to his co-actress. In response, Trisha took to her social media platform, quoting, "To err is human, to forgive is divine." These legal proceedings have underscored the importance of responsible conduct in public spaces, prompting the court to advise Khan's counsel to guide the actor on acting responsibly.
