The novel coronavirus outbreak, that originated in China's Wuhan and has spread to over a hundred countries in the world at an alarming rate, is now a matter of global concern. Among the thousands of infected people across the world right now, a number of them are popular faces, ranging from Hollywood star Tom Hanks to Canadian PM Justin Trudeau's wife, Sophie. Following is a list of all the celebrities infected with COVID-19.
Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson
Celebrity couple Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson announced that they were diagnosed with COVID-19 in Australia on March 13. Taking to social media, he had written that they were taking it one day at a time. He further thanked everyone who was taking care of him and his wife. His most recent update on Twitter read, "We have Covid-19 and are in isolation so we do not spread it to anyone else. There are those for whom it could lead to a very serious illness. We are taking it one-day-at-a-time. There are things we can all do to get through this by following the advice of experts and taking care of ourselves and each other, no? Remember, despite all the current events, there is no crying in baseball. Hanx (sic)."
Rudy Gobert
After Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert (27) tested positive for coronavirus, the NBA suspended its season and nearly 20 percent of NBA players are facing quarantine. Prior to his diagnosis, Gobert had mocked the safety precautions of coronavirus by deliberately rubbing the microphones at a press event. The player has been criticized for his reprehensible behaviour and he later issued an apology for the same. "I have gone through so many emotions since learning of my diagnosis … mostly fear, anxiety, and embarrassment. The first and most important thing is I would like to publicly apologize to the people that I may have endangered. At the time, I had no idea I was even infected," his statement read.
Donovan Mitchell
Following Gobert's diagnosis, Utah Jazz announced that its second player, Donovan Mitchell, tested positive for coronavirus as well. "As a follow-up to yesterday's positive COVID-19 test, Oklahoma health officials tested all members of the Utah Jazz traveling party, confirming one additional positive outcome for a Jazz player. We are working closely with the CDC, Oklahoma and Utah state officials and the NBA to monitor their health and determine the best path moving forward," their statement read.
Daniele Rugani
It was announced on March 11 that Juventus defender Daniele Rugani tested positive for coronavirus just days after Juventus faced Inter Milan in Serie A. Players of both teams, coaching staff, referees, and everybody else involved in the game has been forced into quarantine, and Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo is one of them. After testing positive for the virus, Daniele Rugani took to social media to inform that he is feeling fine. "You will have read the news and that's why I want to reassure all those who are worrying about me, I'm fine. I urge everyone to respect the rules because this virus makes no distinctions. Let's do it for ourselves, for our loved ones and for those around us," his post read.
Mikel Arteta
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta tested positive for coronavirus on March 12 and the club's game against Brighton on Saturday was postponed and club staff who had contact with Arteta have isolated themselves. "Our London Colney training center has been closed after head coach Mikel Arteta received a positive Covid-19 result this evening. Arsenal personnel who had recent close contact with Mikel will now self-isolate inline with Government health guidelines. We expect this to be a significant number of people from Colney, including the full first-team squad and coaching staff," Arsenal informed in a statement. Meanwhile, Arteta had reportedly mentioned following the diagnosis, "This is really disappointing but I took the test after feeling poorly. I will be at work as soon as I'm allowed."
Sophie Trudeau
The office of Candian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed on Thursday night that Justin Trudeau's wife Sophie Trudeau has tested positive for coronavirus and would remain in isolation. She reportedly came down with mild flu-like symptoms on Wednesday following a speaking engagement in the UK. "The Prime Minister is in good health with no symptoms. As a precautionary measure and following the advice of doctors, he will be in isolation for a planned period of 14 days. Also on the advice of doctors, he will not be tested at this stage since he has no symptoms. For the same reason, doctors say there is no risk to those who have been in contact with him recently," the statement from Trudeau's office read.
The novel coronavirus, now officially called COVID-19, has claimed the lives of more than 5100 people and infected over 139000 people across the world. The virus was first identified in Wuhan, Hubei Province, in China. As the death toll and overall cases began rising rapidly across the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global health emergency and the outbreak has now been labelled a pandemic.
