The Madurai High Court's strong stand in the Jeyaraj -Bennicks double murder by police brutality case has moved in the right direction after all the policemen involved namely Ragu Ganesh, Murugan, Balakrishnan and Sridhar were arrested. The key witness in the case constable Revathi gave her statement over phone to the court this morning and the judges have ordered paid leave for her and also protection to her family.
Revathi's husband speaking to media stated that on the fateful day when Jeyaraj and Bennicks were in police custody she had called him thrice at 8 pm, 10 pm and 12 am and expressed her fear and concern that the father-son were being continuously tortured. She had also informed that the men bleeding profusely begged for water.
Revathi had discussed with her husband that she may have to bear witness to the crime and go against the entire police department. Her husband had encouraged her to tell truth citing that in the future their own two female children will get help from someone if she did the right thing.
Similarly Revathi's school going eldest daughter had asked her mother not to fear and speak the truth which finally gave her the resolve to take on the entire masculine might of the police department single handedly.
Jayaraj and Bennix belonging to Sathankulam in Thoothukudi district were arrested on January 19 and booked under Section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 353 (use of force to deter public servant from duty) 269 (negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life), and 506(2) (Punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. They were allegedly brutally tortured while in custody and were later released and taken to a hospital where a doctor declared them fit despite eyewitnesses reporting that they beaten up and still bleeding. They later succumbed to their injuries one after the other.
