Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu made the country proud after she lifted a total of 201kg (88kg in snatch and 113kg in clean and jerk) to win the gold medal in women’s 49kg weightlifting event at the Commonwealth Games 2022.
Mirabai defended her gold medal crown after winning it at the 2018 Games in Gold Coast, creating a new CWG record yesterday while also recording her own personal best. Following her win, the weightlifting champion reportedly said, “I had come prepared to give the best performance in snatch. I wanted to do better than before in snatch, I touched it (her personal best), but could not cross it. But this performance is my best in snatch till date, so I am very happy.”
“I knew the competition at CWG would be relatively easier and that is why I wanted to compete with myself. I wanted to improve my performance and I am happy with my effort,” she was further quoted as saying by a news agency. Sharing a series of pictures from the event, Mirabai captioned her Instagram post, “Lifting 201kg never felt easy but thanks to the love and wishes of billions back home, every challenge is just an attempt away.”
