Expectations

There have been many films based on the underworld don. While most of them created fictional characters, there were few who dared to use the real life references in their films.

Almost, all these films had violence as its backdrop and that's the reason for 'Coffee with D' to celebrate, as this movie is a comical take on the underworld don. With flavor of the season, Sunil Grover in lead role the movie seems interesting and some decent amount of expectations riding over it.

Story

'Coffee with D' is a story of a TV journalist Arnab Ghosh (Sunil Grover), who is known for his hard-hitting political interviews on prime time. His news channel head Roy (Rajesh Sharma) feels that Arnab has lost his flare and need to do something different. Arnab gets an amazing idea from his wife Parull (Anjana Sukhani) about interviewing India's most wanted criminal D (Zaikr Hussain). Arnab along with his writer Neha (Dipannita Sharma) and other colleagues start instigating D by making various fake stories related to him. These fake news upsets the don who later agrees to give his first interview to Arnab. This leads to the India’s biggest one on one interview between Arnab and D.

The 'Glitz' Factor

The basic plot line is interesting and a different take on the films which have been based on the underworld lords. Though, there are some enjoyable scenes which keeps you engaged in the weak and dragging first half of the film.

The movie catches its momentum in the second half where the interview between Sunil and Zakir takes place. The entire interview track is the best part in the movie. There are some good one liner punches which will tickle your funny bone, but the movie demanded more such stuffs.

Zakir Hussain is outstanding and does his part with total grace. Pankaj Tripati and Rajesh Sharma lend good support.

The 'Non-Glitz' Factor

The story strongly reminds you of the Hollywood film 'The Interview'. Sadly, the impact gets diluted due to bad dubbing and the muting of words in many key scenes. The entire fun gets spoiled due to bad dubbing and the muting of words. There were few unwanted forced comical tracks which fail to work in the favour of the film.

The whole interview is achieved without any hardship and Sunil’s behavior in the interview was inconsistent. The screenplay should have been crisp and full of such humorous moments. The cinematography is weak and fails to enhance the flow of the film. The music is not up to the mark.

Director could have made this movie much better. Sunil Grover starts his act by aping the real life journalist Arnab Goswami and later gets his right momentum only in the middle portions of the film. Dipannita Sharma is highly wasted and her track was totally unwanted. Anjana Sukhani was fine in her part, but had nothing concrete to deliver.

Final 'Glitz'

'Coffee with D' instead of leaving a refreshing effect, leaves you with snigger effect due to some good comical moments which gets ruined due to bad muting and dull first half.
