C/O Saira Banu Review
C/O Saira Banu' is a melodramatic tale of a mother-son duo. Theirs is a unique relationship and the movie is all about how the mother goes all out to get her son free from a legal case. Though not a neatly tied up movie, the movie is engaging enough to command your attention. There are lags and humour that goes flat, but on the whole the film with its unique twist and some genuine bondiing makes for an interesting watch.
Saira Banu (Manju Warrier) is a post woman and a single mother. Her son Joshua Peter (Shane Nigam) is an LLB student with a passion for photography. The mother and son are thick friends. Things are going well when they get into a small fight over Joshua deciding to follow his dreams. He leaves home in a huff only to become embroilled in a legal hassle involving some high end people. How the middle class single mother strives to untangle her son is what the movie is about. Here, Annie John Tharavdy (Amala Akkineni) is a renowned lawyer who help Saira in this case.
The first half of the movie sets the base for the movie depicting the mother son relationship. This part is also quite refreshing though there are glitches in the humour part. The sequences that unfold after the interval takes on a thriller mode with the legal case and court scenes. The investigation is quite interesting to watch. There is the novelty of the script and a suspense to keep us engrossed till the end.
Debutant director Anthony Sony has almost pulled off the story with a semi realistic narration. But he has not been able to get the best out of his actors. Manju Warrier falters in the humour department though the drama part is handled with ease. She is convincing as a young mother from Malabar. Shane is apt as Joshua. His expressions are subtle and somestimes a bit too subtle. Amala is flawless as the hard hitting lawyer whose fire comes from loosing her son to her ex-husband post divorce. But there are some issues with lip syncing and that comes out as a flaw. Shaan's script is interesting and stands out for its novel content. Music is good enough and sets the mood of the story pretty well.
'C/O Saira Banu' is a watchable movie with a novel content. It may not be a masterpiece or a laugh riot, but the heartfelt emotions accopanying the mother son duo and the thrills in the case is enough is keep us glued.
