CM Stalin writes to centre opposing Cinematograph Amendment Bill 2021

The central government recently released the draft Cinematograph Amendment Bill 2021, which proposed to empower the central government in the recertification of already certified films.

Many celebrities were against this bill and recently, actor Karthi, actress Rohini and others met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K Stalin and submitted a petition urging the Tamil Nadu government to co-operate with the film industry’s struggles against the Central Government’s draft bill and urge the Central Government to drop the amendment.

Speaking to reporters Karthi said that the Chief Minister had assured that appropriate action would be taken in this regard. Following this CM Stalin wrote a letter to the Ministry of Law and Justice, Communications, Electronics and Information Technology urging to withdraw the proposed Cinematograph bill.

His letter reads “I urge you to withdraw the proposed Amendment to Cinematograph Act 1952 and also allow for functional autonomy of the CBFC, so that we remain as a progressive nation, and where creative thinking, that includes art, culture and film making, blossom without fear or favour.”

He also stressed that the central government’s new amendment bill should be withdrawn immediately as it is likely to affect freedom of expression and reduce the powers of state governments.
