Tamil Nadu chief-minister Edapadi K. Palaniswami convened an all-party meeting yesterday in Chennai to discuss the fall-out of the recent Supreme Court verdict on sharing of Cauvery River water. The meeting decided to send an all-party delegation to meet the Prime Minister to impress upon Tamil Nadu’s needs in this regard.
The meeting was held at the State Secretariat in Chennai and was attended among others by chief-minister Edapadi K. Palaniswami, deputy chief-minister O. Panneerselvam, State Ministers, Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin, senior DMK leader Durai Murugan, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president Tirunavukkarasar, MDMK general secretary Vaiko, TMC’s G.K. Vasan, DMDK’s Sudeesh, PMK’s A.K. Moorthy and VCK’s Thol Thirumavalavan.
The meeting, which lasted for more than six hours on either side of the lunch session (during when the chief-minister played a perfect host interacting freely with all party leaders), passed three resolutions as mentioned below:
• An all-party delegation from the State would meet the Prime Minister to apprise him of the States need for Cauvery water;
• A Cauvery Management Board should be set up by the Centre within six weeks’ time as directed by the apex Court; and
• Proper action ought to be initiated by the State after consulting legal experts.
The meeting passed these resolutions after long discussions which went on smoothly. It may be recalled that the meeting accepted in to Stalin’s proposal to send an all-party delegation from the State to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to explain the State’s viewpoint.
