Tamil Nadu chief-minister Edapadi K. Palaniswami inaugurated yesterday the free ‘Amma Wi-Fi’ facility to access internet to people in Chennai and a few other cities.
Free ‘wi-fi’ facility has been made available at important places in Chennai, Trichy, Madurai, Coimbatore and Salem. While the Labour Statue on the Marina Beach is the location in Chennai to access the free wi-fi facility, bus terminals in other cities have been chosen as the places to get access to free internet.
The late chief-minister had assured prior to the 2016 Assembly polls that wi-fi facilities would be made available free-of-cost to people at major bus terminals, parks and commercial complexes. She had also stated that such facilities would be made available at 50 places in the first phase. The Edapadi Palaniswami-led Govt. has thus created free ‘Amma Wi-Fi Zones’ in Chennai, Trichy, Madurai, Salem and Coimbatore.
Created at a cost of Rs.8.80 crores by the State-run ‘Arasu Cable’ cable operator, a G.O. in this regard was issued last August. EPS inaugurated yesterday via video-conferencing mode the free ‘Amma Wi-Fi’ facilities at Marina Beach in Chennai, Gandhipuram Bus Terminus in Coimbatore, Salem Central Bus Terminus, Trichy Central Bus Terminus and at the Mattuthavani MGR Bus Terminal in Madurai.
A person get access to free internet facility for 20 minutes a day after which he/she would be charged Rs.10/- per hour.
