Recently the two icons of Malayalam film industry Mammootty and Mohanlal, both created ripples in media regarding their upcoming project based on a historical character Kunjali Marakkar.As per information both the actors are making preparations to enact the legendary Zamorin naval chief Kunjali Marakkar.

Earlier in November film director Priyadarshan had informed that he is on the verge of making a big budget project with Mohanlal based on the story of Kunjali Marakkar and soon starts the film in June. Simultaneously producer Shaji Nadeshan revealed that Mammootty and director Santosh Sivan will be collaborating on a movie on Kunjali Marakkar, and also stated that they will start the project in July 2018.

In a response, Priyadarshan remarked that he would cease his movie if Sivan’s Marakkar film begins within eight months. But if they postpone the project, he will naturally go ahead with his Kunjali project. However, the social media post of singer MG Sreekumar triggers that Priyadarshan will soon commence shooting of the movie. He posted, “Our new film ‘KUNJALI MARAKKAR’ starts shortly. Please bless us. Love you all (sic).”

In  1966, director SS Rajan had made the film on the same storyline which was produced by TK Pareekutty and Kottarakkara Sreedharan Nair’s brilliant acting as Kunjali Marakkar had won the film the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Malayalam.
