Supermodel Cindy Crawford has recounted feeling objectified during the early days of her career while appearing on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 1986 alongside her agent, John Casablancas. Crawford, who was just 20 years old at the time, shared her recollection of the experience. During the show, Winfrey asked Casablancas if Crawford had always possessed her figure, prompting her to stand before the audience for inspection.
Did she always have this body? Winfrey queried, admiring Crawford's physique. The incident is featured in a flashback in the Apple TV+ series The Supermodels. Reflecting on the moment, Crawford remarked, I was like the chattel, or a child â be seen and not heard.
In present-day commentary, Crawford expressed her discomfort with the situation when viewed through a contemporary lens. She stated, When you look at it through today's eyes when Oprah's, like, 'Stand up and show me your body.' Like, show us why you're worthy of being here. At the moment, I didn't recognize it. Only when I look back at it, and I was, like, 'Oh, my gosh, that was so not okay, really.' Especially from Oprah.
Representatives for both Crawford and Winfrey have not responded to requests for comment.
The docuseries The Super Models delves into the lives of '90s supermodels, featuring Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, and Christy Turlington. Crawford shared her early experiences growing up in DeKalb, Illinois, and how her parents were initially skeptical of the modeling industry. Her father even though modeling was synonymous with prostitution, while her parents accompanied her to her first modeling appointment.
