West Indies cricket star Chris Gayle was awarded USD 221,000 from an Australian court on Monday after he won a defamation case against an Australian media group a year ago over an alleged incident during the 2015 World Cup. He was accused by Fairfax Media, publisher of The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, of exposing himself to a masseuse during the tournament.
Gayle refuted the allegations, claiming that the journalists behind the story wanted to "destroy him" at that time. He won his defamation case in October last year, with jurors finding Fairfax was motivated by malice and had failed to establish a defense of truth. Fairfax reacted to this, challenging the verdict. "The jury was misled in a way that prejudiced Fairfax and Fairfax did not get a fair trial," a spokesman said.
