Ace director Pa Ranjith's magnum opus 'Thangalaan' starring Chiyaan Vikram is under making since last year. The film has an ensemble star cast comprising Parvathy, Pasupathi, Malavika Mohanan & Daniel Caltagirone. The period action drama revolves around the mine workers of Kolar Gold Fields. There is a huge buzz around the film's title 'Thangalaan'.

Now, we have some exciting information about the etymology of the name. In general, Thangalaan might mean leader of a race, guardian, warrior of the frontier or protector of the people. But it is being said that the makers have specifically extracted this name from the 'Census of British India', released by the British Indian government in 1881.

It is said that the census contains 84 sub-divisions of the Paraiyar community and 'Tangalan Paraiyan' is listed as the 59th Tamil-speaking Paraiyar ethnic group. The movie's title is said to have derived from here. The communities are named after the job of the people. It was these aborigines who did the labour of mining gold in the Kolar gold fields.

The people from this depressed community are known for their hard work and warlike nature against the oppressors. Recently, the movie team launched a glimpse video of Thangalaan and Chiyaan Vikram's peculiar hairstyle in it turned many heads. The certain hairstyle is said to be based on the hairstyle of South Indian Tribal Communities of the Dravidian race in the early 19th century.
