Karthik Subbaraj is one of the leading directors in the Tamil film industry. His latest gangster film 'Mahaan', released on Amazon Prime Video, has the father-son duo Chiyaan Vikram and Dhruv Vikram locking horns with each other. Now, a video of the filmmaker talking about the creative compromise that he had to make in the movie is going viral.

Director Karthik Subbaraj rued that he can’t express his idea freely in his movies, owing to a climate of fear. In a recent interview with a TV channel, the director recalled that he wasn't able to use a strong dialogue in Mahaan that would have defined the theme of the story better. He is referring to the climax sequence in which Vikram and Dhruv have a lengthy conversation about the erosion of Gandhism.

Karthik Subbaraj said, "There was a dialogue in the movie: ‘it is an ideologically motivated violent extremist like you who shot and killed Gandhi.’ But I was asked to change it. I was told you can say whatever you want about Gandhi but don’t say anything about Godse as it will create problems." This interview video clip is being virally shared by fans and netizens on social networking websites.

“In the times we live in, we are allowed to say Gandhi died. But if we say Godse shot Gandhi many will get angry. That’s why I changed the line to: ‘It is people like you who destroyed Gandhi and Gandhism.’ I can’t state more clearly than that. Godse is a terrorist, who killed the father of our nation. But I am afraid that if I talk aboutaell that fact, I will get into problems. And the current situation in the country upsets me,” the maker added.
