Chittoor worker dies after walking 150 km to escape lockdown

In a tragic incident, a 28-year-old construction worker named Hariprasad lost his life upon his return to his village in Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh, from Bangalore. The migrant labourer had walked 150 km to escape the lockdown. He succumbed to physical stress near Mittapalle in Chittoor district, reports say.

"No villager had helped Hariprasad out due to the fear that he might have contracted Covid-19. Fellow villagers didn't let his family perform last rites. Nobody was allowed to bring his body into the village," a report claims.

Upon coming to know of his demise, health department officials came to the spot and performed a test on him. The result for novel coronavirus came back negative.

"The victim was a TB patient. He suffered dehydration, as he had walked a long distance in heat," doctors have been quoted as saying.

The incident has saddened many. "Hariprasad died an undignified death due to poverty. It would have been humane on the part of the government to arrange buses for transport. The facility came in too late in the day," a social media user said.
