Veteran Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Sitaram Yechury passed away on Thursday at the age of 72, following a prolonged illness. The senior politician had been in critical condition for several days after being admitted to AIIMS New Delhi on August 19 for the treatment of a pneumonia-like chest infection. His demise has prompted a wave of grief across the political spectrum, with tributes pouring in from leaders of various parties.
In a statement released on X (formerly Twitter), the CPI(M) said, "It is with profound grief that we announce the passing away of CPI(M) General Secretary, our beloved Comrade Sitaram Yechury, at 3:03 PM today, 12th September, at AIIMS, New Delhi. He was suffering from a respiratory tract infection that developed complications. We thank the doctors, nursing staff, and the Director of the Institute for the excellent treatment and care extended to Comrade Yechury. Details of public viewing and homage will be announced shortly."
Yechury had been battling a severe respiratory infection, which had kept him in the ICU under the care of a multidisciplinary team of doctors. Megastar Chiranjeevi also shared his sorrow, stating, "Deeply distressed by the news of the passing of Shri Sitaram Yechury, a veteran leader with over five decades of political journey and a towering figure in the CPM.
