China-made coronavirus vaccines are not ideal. The vaccines are not effective in preventing the infection. This is what the latest statement by China's top disease control official conveys. The admission has come after China, from where coronavirus originated in 2019, supplied millions and millions of shots to 60 countries.
On Monday, CNN reported that the efficacy of Chinese Covid-19 vaccines is not high, as per China's own top health official. Also, the country's authorities are weighing options to bolster protection by, for example, mixing different shots.
Vaccine shots made from different technologies will be mixed and administered to Chinese people. This will affect hundreds of millions of people, a New York Times report says.
Two pharma companies in China have been manufacturing Covid vaccines. Neither of them has published comprehensive clinical trial data so far.
China is looking at inoculating 40% of its 1.4 billion population by July 1.
