A 29-year-old employee of an IT firm, Karthikeyan, set off a mini bomb in his office at Mahindra World City, an Information Technology Special Economic Zone (SEZ). Karthikeyan required Rs. 50 lakhs for personal purposes urgently. He had asked his employers for the money via email. Following no response, Karthikeyan was angry. Being an electrical and electronics engineering graduate, he built a small bomb which was linked to a mobile app.
On June 7th, Karthikeyan hid the bomb inside a ball and took it to the IT park. He set it off outside. He had planned to threaten his employers with a bigger bomb later. All that happened, however, was a lot of smoke was released from the device. The security guards called the Chengalpet police who investigated the matter. Following their search and analysis of the CCTV footage, they narrowed the suspect list to Karthikeyan. They went to his residence in Maraimalai Nagar where he apparently tried to kill himself to evade capture. He was arrested and is under judicial custody.
